Endodontic Retreatment
High-Quality Endodontic Treatment and its Longevity
High-quality endodontic treatment typically provides longevity to the treated tooth, similar to any other tooth in the mouth. However, in some cases, a root canal treatment may not be entirely successful, and symptoms such as pain or swelling may persist or even return.
In such situations, the preferred approach is usually Endodontic Reintervention (Root Canal Retreatment). This involves reopening the treated tooth, cleaning the root canals again, and filling them to address any issues that might have caused the treatment to fail.
Causes of Healing Problems in Endodontic Treatment
Healing issues after endodontic treatment are often caused by bacteria. These bacteria may have either been present in the tooth but were not fully eliminated during the initial treatment, or they may have re-entered the tooth after the treatment was completed.
Common causes of failure include:
Common Causes of Endodontic Treatment Failure:
-
Undetected Root Canals: Some root canals may have been missed or overlooked during the initial treatment.
-
Incomplete Cleaning: Part of the root canal system was not thoroughly cleaned or sealed during the first treatment.
-
Delayed Restoration: The crown or final restoration was not placed promptly after treatment, leaving the tooth vulnerable to recontamination.
-
Restoration Failure: The crown or restoration may not effectively prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth, either due to damage or the development of new cavities.

When endodontic retreatment is chosen as a solution, the existing restoration and materials from the previous treatment are removed. The root canals are thoroughly cleaned and refilled, and a temporary filling is placed.
You should then return promptly to your dentist for the placement of a permanent restoration, ensuring the tooth is fully functional once again.
